The origin of Ashford University dates back to 1891, when the Sisters of St. Francis were asked by Father James A. Murray to help teach in Clinton, Iowa. The Sisters founded their mother house and the Mount St. Clare Academy, which was a day and boarding school for girls in 1893. In 1910, the Academy and mother house were moved to the newly-built Mount St. Clare house, which is still in use today. The Sisters established Mount St. Clare College, as a liberal arts institution in 1918, which was the predecessor to Ashford University.
Mount St. Clare College made the approved list of colleges for teacher education in Iowa from 1932 to 1954. The college expanded in the 1950s and 1960s after the college received its first accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1950. The college became co-ed in 1967. Mount St. Clare College began to offer graduate courses online in 2002. The University was purchased by Bridgepoint Education, Inc. and changed its name to Ashford University in 2005.
As of January 2008, Ashford has nearly 18,000 undergraduate and 1000 graduate students enrolled in traditional and online degree programs.
Ashford University is located in Clinton, Iowa, which is near the Iowa and Illinois border and located between Chicago and Des Moines.
Ashford University is regionally accredited by The North Central Associated of Colleges and Schools. The Iowa Department of Education accredits Ashford University’s College of Education.

Ashford University participates in many financial aid programs such as Federal Pell Grant, Federal PLUS Loan, Federal Pell Grant, Federal Stafford Loan Subsidized Loan, Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Family Educational Loan Programs, Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, and Student State Incentive Grant (SSIG).
Tuition reimbursement from employers, Military Tuition Assistance Plan, Military Veterans Benefit Plan, alternative loans, and Federal Work-Study are also available.
Ashford University allows credit transfers of up to 99 semester credits or 148.5 quarter credits toward an Ashford University degree. Credits from community colleges are included. You can even earn up to 75 hours of non-traditional credit from life experience, military experience, and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP).
