Two Augustinians from Saint Augustine's Church in Philadelphia founded Villanova University in 1842 in Villanova, PA. The university was called the Augustinian College of Villanova. The college was closed in 1845 due to the 1844 Philadelphia Nativist Riots that burned the church. The college reopened in 1846 and was given the power to award degrees in 1848. The school closed during the Civil War and reopened in 1865 and where it has operated without interruption since. Villanova began as an all male school until 1918 when evening classes were offered to nuns. When the nursing school opened in 1958, women began permanently attending the school and Villanova become fully coeducational in 1968. The university continued to grow and expand throughout the 20th century. Villanova University is the largest and oldest Catholic University in Pennsylvania. Villanova currently has over 17,000 students with 82,000 alumni.

Villanova offers several scholarships based on academic merit including Villanova University Grant, St. Martin de Porres Grant, Presidential Scholarship, Villanova Scholarship, Commuter Scholarship, and Villanova National Merit Scholarship. Villanova also offers ROTC scholarships for Air Force, Army, and Navy. Private scholarships from outside organizations are also offered such as the Sallie Mae Fund, National Society of Collegiate Schools Scholarship, and Campus Discovery Scholarship.
Villanova participates in federal financial aid programs such as Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) and Federal PLUS Loans, and Federal Graduate PLUS Loans. State financial aid is also available such as the PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency) Grant. Students may also apply for private loans and grants. The Villanova Tuition Payment Plan is also available. Villanova also offers military and veterans education benefits.
Villanova University allows up to 60 transfer credits that are evaluated on an individual basis. The university also encourages independent study by offering a Credit by Exam and accelerated course options. You can also receive credit from College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations.
