A doctorate degree is considered the highest level of education in most countries of the world. It can take from 2-8 years (not counting previous degree levels), and is also referred to as a Ph.D. or doctoral degree. There are levels of post-doctorate study that go beyond this level. The term doctorate comes from the Latin word, docere, meaning “to teach”, which is shortened from licentia dociendi, meaning “license to teach”. So, in practice as well as theory, people with doctorate degrees are able to continue as teachers of that specialty. This becomes clear when we note that most doctoral degrees are in the education field.

Fast fact: According to the 2007 Digest of Education Statistics, more than 27,000 women received doctorate degrees over the 2005-2006 academic year.

Which came first, the doctorate or the doctor?

Although a person who holds a doctorate degree is referred to as “doctor”, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can be called a physician. But, all physicians must hold either a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree (although these are professional degrees, not research-based, post-master, doctorate-level degrees).
