The U.S. Department of Education reports that a total of 256,151 bachelor degrees in humanities and 242,506 bachelor degrees in social sciences were conferred during the 2004-2005 academic year. On the master level, 42,207 humanities degrees and 35,782 social sciences degrees were awarded. Doctorate degrees were conferred to 6,806 people for humanities and 8,925 people for social sciences. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, employment rates in these fields have increased by more than 16% from 1975 until 2001.
