Briarcliffe College was founded in 1966 as a one-year business school with the goal to meet the career-oriented higher learning needs of residents in Long Island and help them achieve success in the world of business. A branch campus was established in 1969. The school was authorized to grant an associate degree in occupational studies in 1979. In 1981, a third campus was established. Throughout the 1990s, the college expanded its curriculum and added more programs such as graphic design and computer-aided design. During the late 1980s and early 1990s Briarcliffe College had a high female student population and in 1992, it acquired Grumman Data Systems Institute, which predominantly enrolled males students. The two institutions created a coeducational institution of about 2,000 students. Briarcliffe College was granted regional accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 1994. The Career Education Corporation purchased the college in 1997 and the college began offering bachelor’s degree programs in 1998.
