Southern New Hampshire University is a private non-profit university based out of Manchester, New Hampshire. Its mission is to provide education to assist students in being successful in their careers and effective contributors to their communities. Its educational philosophy is to challenge students’ academic potential and prepare them for professional lives in a constantly changing and dynamic world. It is committed to providing a supporting and close learning community and delivering excellent instruction in various formats. Southern New Hampshire University offers over 100 undergraduate and 40 graduate programs in various areas such as business, education, liberal arts, hospitality, and community economic development.

Southern New Hampshire University Online is one of the largest distance-learning programs in the New England region. It offers online degree programs at the certificate, associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree levels in a wide range of areas such as accounting, business administration, communication, computer information technology, creative writing, educational leadership, fashion merchandising, history, justice studies, marketing, psychology, and sport management. There are six start dates for undergraduate programs and four start dates for graduate programs throughout the year. Online students are able to access their courses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere with an Internet connection. Students are required to take an online orientation course to obtain the necessary information to be successful in online courses. Online courses are delivered via the Blackboard course management system. Blackboard features multimedia presentations, assignment drop box, online grade book, and asynchronous discussion forums. Southern New Hampshire University Online is committed to supporting the online class experience and it offers online services to help students succeed including the Shapiro Library that features an array of books and journals and access to academic and business databases, online technical support that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and an online bookstore to enable students to order books and other course materials.

Southern New Hampshire University was founded as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science in 1932. For the first 30 years the school remained fairly small and in 1961 it was incorporated and renamed New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. The college received degree-granting authority in 1963 and soon after conferred associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees. In 1968, the college became non-profit and it changes its name to New Hampshire College in 1969. The college grew and changed throughout its history and it added graduate degree programs and additional schools of education. The college began offering Internet-based distance learning programs in 1995. In 2001, the college became Southern New Hampshire University.

Financing Options

Southern New Hampshire University participates in numerous financial aid programs including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Direct Stafford Subsidized Loan, Federal Direct Stafford Unsubsidized Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), Federal Graduate PLUS Loan, Governor’s Success Grant, and state grants. The university also accepts alternative loans and offers a monthly payment plan for students.

Credit Earning Options

Southern New Hampshire University grants transfer credit for previously completed coursework at other accredited institutions of higher learning. All transfer courses must have been completed with a grade of a C- or higher. Students are able to transfer up to 30 credits toward an associate degree and 90 credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Southern New Hampshire University also grants credits for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP) examinations, and Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support (DANTES) examinations. Students are able to gain credit for prior learning through a portfolio assessment. A maximum of 15 credits can be earned for prior learning experiences toward a bachelor’s degree program.
