A.O. Sullivan and A.R. Sullivan founded Sullivan University as Sullivan Business College in 1962. The college was authorized to offer associate degrees in 1972. In 1973, it merged with Bryant and Stratton Business College and in 1979 it became the first private career college in the southern region to receive accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Throughout the 1980s the college continued to expand and it added bachelor degree programs in 1990. It was authorized to grant master degrees in 1997 and in 1999 it launched its e-learning system. The college changed its name to Sullivan University in 2000 and was authorized to grant doctoral degrees in 2008.
