New maids usually follow experienced workers and perform routine tasks. They move on to more complex independent duties as they gain the necessary skills and experience. Maids learn how to clean thoroughly and proficiently and how to choose and safely use many different cleansing agents. They also learn how to operate a variety of machines such as vacuums and buffers. Maids complete additional training as needed throughout out their careers.

What are the prospects for a career as a maid?

Employment of maids is expected to grow more slowly than average for all professions, increasing 6% from 2008 to 2018 (1). The growing population and increase in accommodations services will create some job growth.

Job prospects should be good especially for maids with extensive experience. Many job openings will stem from the need to replace maids that leave the occupation.

How much do maids make?

As of February 2010, maids with 1 to 4 years experience earn average annual salaries between $12,657 and $31,724. Those with 5 to 9 years experience earn average annual salaries between $14,279 and $43,236 (2).

Maids must have a solid understanding of the necessary cleaning policies and procedures of their employer. Patience, dependability, and ability to perform repetitive tasks are essential characteristics.
