A master degree is generally a 1- or 2-year degree (not counting previous degree levels), and is considered a graduate or postgraduate degree, because it is earned after a bachelor, or first degree. This degree distinguishes the bearer as having a high-order view, or “mastery” of their chosen subject.
According to the Digest of Education Statistics (2007), enrollment for graduate degree programs had been holding steady at about 1.3 million in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This changed dramatically between 1985 and 2005, when enrollments jumped up an incredible 59 percent. You can earn a master degree in Arts, Philosophy, Accountancy, Divinity, Science, Law, Business and Social Science just to name a few.
