The University of Illinois traces its foundation to many private health institutions that were established in the later part of the 19th century. It was officially founded in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois as Illinois Industrial University in 1867. The private health colleges were completely incorporated into the university in 1913 becoming the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. The colleges transitioned into the University of Illinois at the Medical Center in 1961. During the 1960s, the college expanded and established new campuses. It became the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1982 and in 1987 it was awarded research institution status. Throughout its history the University of Illinois at Chicago has been a leader in creating a comprehensive urban research institution of higher learning.
