University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 by Dr. John Sperling, an economic historian and professor, whose goal was to provide accessible higher education to working students. The school expanded to San Jose, California in 1980, and by 1989, the university became one of the first schools to offer programs online. Today, the University of Phoenix has over 100 degree programs offered at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. There are nearly 200 locations in North America, and the online format is available in most countries.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers bachelor and master degrees in areas such as business, communication, and psychology. The College of Undergraduate Business and Management offers bachelor degrees and certificates in areas such as accounting, business administration, communication, finance, and marketing. University of Phoenix offers a variety of financing options including third-party billing, military, and tuition reimbursement plans. The university also participates in federal financial aid programs such as Federal Pell Grant, Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Stafford Student Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal PLUS Loan, the National SMART Grant and the U.S. Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant. Credit Earning Options

University of Phoenix accepts transfer credits from accredited institutions and are evaluated on an individual basis.
